HOUSTON - Champion two major tournaments in 2008, Padraig Harrington was named the player of the year by the Golf Writers of America on Monday, receiving 75 percent of the vote to three years to stop the reign of Tiger Woods.
Lorena Ochoa won the honor for the ladies, while Jay Haas became the first senior golfer to be selected for the third consecutive year.
Harrington successfully defended his title at the British Open, and he became the first European in history to win two major tournaments in a row in the same season by winning the PGA Championship. He received 184 votes, against 58 for Woods and Vijay Singh for five.
Ochoa had seven victories this year, including the Kraft Nabisco Championship, a major tournament. It was the choice of columnists in the past three years. Ochoa received 232 votes, against 13 for Paula Creamer and Yani Tseng three.
Haas has signed two wins on the Champions Tour in 2008, the Senior PGA Championship.
