Spartans' Quick is Coach of Year

After four years as the softball coach at East Nicolaus High, Richard Quick is leaving on a high note.

"I had planned on leaving after this year, so I already was prepared for it," said Quick, adding he plans to continue as the defensive coordinator on the football team.

"We just had a real special group this year, they're so tenacious," Quick said. "With this much talent, I'm more like a manager than a coach."

When his East Nicolaus Spartans fell to Liberty in last year's Northern Section Div. V championship game, they set a goal for themselves.

"That loss left a bad taste in their mouth. We were talking about the getting back there since day one," Quick said. "East Nicolaus has been real fortunate to be in the section title for the last four years."

East Nicolaus bounced back by capturing the Section title, and with it, Quick was named the 2008 Appeal-Democrat All-Area Coach of the Year.

In four years as coach, Quick posted a record of 88-14-3 overall.
